This paper examines Chán master Jìngxiū’s preface to the original Zǔtáng jí in one scroll, which was presented to him by Jìng and Yún at the Zhāoqìng monastery in Quánzhōu around the mid-tenth century. Building on a recent TEI-based edition, it offers an annotated translation and comprehensive analysis of the preface, with special attention to its structure, linguistic features, and issues of intertextuality. The essay focuses on elements of textual history, the possible incentives behind the compilation of the Zǔtáng jí, and Jìngxiū’s perception of the text. Most importantly, this study investigates in detail two idiomatic expressions used by Jìngxiū (i.e., “[cases of] shuǐhè easily arise”; “[the characters] wū and mǎ are difficult to distinguish”), showing their significance for understanding the preface. In addition, we demonstrate that further research is needed to support the hypothesis according to which the original Zǔtáng jí would correspond to the first two fascicles of the received Goryeo edition of 1245. Eventually, this article serves as the first part of a research summary on the textual history of the Zǔtáng jí aimed at facilitating further studies on this highly important Chán text.

Miss Mary McClure, of Fenchow, Shansi, China, has placed on deposit a Ming edition of the Buddhist work, Shi shi yuan liu ying hua shi ji (The origin of Buddhism and its development in China), originally issued under the auspices of the Emperor Chenghua (成化) in 1486. This work, in 4 juan, and 4 volumes (each page 23 by 41 cm), is ascribed in the imperial preface to a priest, Baocheng, who probably lived in the early Ming since the narrative itself is carried through the close of Yuan. According to Baocheng, there were six chapters in the original version of this work, with the title Shi jia ru lai ying hua lu. Volume I depicts the life of Gautama Buddha through the period of enlightenment; volume II his ministry; volume III the spread of Buddhism to China; and volume IV the reception accorded to this religion by Chinese emperors and officials of various dynasties. Each volume contains 100 paintings colored by hand, each painting accompanied by a page of quotation from other works dealing with the episode in question. Dès cette époque, de nombreux ports le long de la côte chinoise expédièrent des biens provenant de différentes régions du sud comme du nord de la Chine. Mais ces marchandises n’étaient pas envoyées directement à leur destination finale. Elles passaient par un entrepôt dans l’océan Indien, entre la Chine et le monde arabe.Les documents arabes et chinois du xe siècle nous apprennent que dès le ixe siècle, le commerce s’effectuait par zones circulaires : l’aire de la Chine à l’Asie du sud-est, une autre entre l’Asie du sud-est et l’Arabie et le golfe Persique, une dernière entre le monde arabe et l’Afrique orientale. Les deux entrepôts les plus importants étaient celui du Sri Vijaya et celui de Bassorah. Selon les archives, la Chine et Sri Vijaya entretenaient une relation étroite. Les documents chinois et arabes font apparaître des produits venant d’Asie du sud-est. Ces textes relevant des itinéraires sont mieux documentés pour le canal de Malacca qu’ils ne le sont pour l’autre côté. Les cargaisons des épaves de Belitung et de Ceribon contiennent des produits de tout l’océan Indien, ce qui porte à penser que le commerce maritime des ix-xe siècles de l’océan Indien trouvait dans Palembang (Sri Vijaya) un centre fondamental de diffusion.
