How scary is Happy Death Day? ›

As for the movie's slasher elements, they're not terribly gory or scary; they seem to be in line with the movie's lighthearted tone. But fans of slasher movies will certainly enjoy some of the clichés Landon plays with (in some ways, Happy Death Day isn't dissimilar to Scream or The Final Girls in that regard).

Filming. Filming took place at and around Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and it lasted 5 weeks. The scenes where Tree awakens in Carter's bed after her death were filmed back to back in a span of two days.

"Happy Death Day" is a surprisingly good film, with the combination of horror, romantic comedy, mystery and thriller genres. The most important is the humor and Jessica Rothe´s performance is great in the role of the cynical Tree Gelbman.

However, Tree becomes stuck in the time loop, leading to the day being reset each time she is killed. In one of the loops, Tree believes he is the Babyface Killer and stops him, leading her to believe the loop is over. However, once home, she eats the poisoned cupcake and wakes up on Monday the 18th once more.

She is the roommate of the film's protagonist, Theresa "Tree" Gelbman, whom she desired to kill (as The Bayfield Babyface Killer) for having an affair with Lori's love interest Dr. Gregory Butler. She was portrayed by Ruby Modine in her first villainous role.

Tree realized she was in a time loop and tried to avoid her death by barricading herself in her room. However, she was murdered again when the killer hid in her bathroom. During the next loop, she relayed her story to Carter, who suggested that she take advantage of the loop in order to figure out who her killer is.

A few jump scares throughout. While the film is a horror comedy at its base, the atmosphere is quite tense and menacing, as it deals with a young woman trapped in a "Groundhog Day"-like scenario as she tries to uncover the identity of the person who killed her on her birthday.

Parents need to know that Happy Death Day 2U is the horror-comedy sequel to Happy Death Day, about a serial killer and a time loop. Slasher movie-style violence includes killings, stabbing, shooting, and some blood (dribbles and spurts).

Plus, not only does this film balance black comedy, horror — Tree's first death and one in particular near the end involving a police car in particular come to mind — which have a lot of heart-wrenching moments and surprising amounts of depth, but it's also incredibly fun.
